surfingarcadia

At the beginning of every year that momentum we get is driving by a propitious nature that flows through us and revitalizes are passion to seek out the journey that lies ahead of us.  Which is why it is in perfect form to celebrate unsung dedicated ones surfing the finest breaks however big or small because even in the remote and most unlikely parts of the world you can still find destinations like this one in Arcadia Beach, Odesa, Ukraine.  The official day for Ukrainian Christmas was yesterday, where some celebrate for the whole week and in keeping with my roots  I’ll shall do the same because Ukrainians know how to party.

They Call It Black Friday

BBf1dD6.img

“Hand over the #@$%  t-shirt” is the title of this picture and article written by Scott Feschuk for Macleans magazine. It truly exemplifies the complete beautiful madness that can happen to a human being. I don’t believe this is something neanderthals dealt because media may blow it up a little but the footage is true, its crazy. Black Friday in a way is similar to one of the cheap buffets you have in Vegas. It is the mass production of something a bulk price. The idea of the money you save gives some perception of value that can make a herd of people levitate of the ground and rush a department store like juggernaut bulldozing down anyone who gets in there way. However that same energy could be harnessed with a different inspirited approach by finding that one particular gift for someone. Investigative and thoughtful you get to tell the story of how your search lead you to that special something that was what you felt the person really needed or wanted. It will be more methodic with heart and less psychotic franticness with rage. Unless your whole family wants i phones, then by all means go on Black Friday, they have wicked deals there. Just watch your back,  because one false move and grandma will ripped that damn phone from your cold dead hands.

What Happened To The Curious Cat

IMG_20141031_201021

What compels us to seek the unknown. Staring down the dark hallway of that creepy building. We know we shouldn’t go down there without someone but that something says ” I’m gonna check it out”. the Awesomeness of Curiosity. The same thing that finds us righteousness is the same thing can leave us hacked up into little bits. Or become someones lampshade. After getting up close and personal with this creepy dwelling, by no means do I have it all covered. Nevertheless as fan of the horror flicks and in the spirit of Halloween, I simply say a few words to the wise.

Do not go into that random abandon cabin you just found especially if your being chased by a maniac.

Do not go into that deserted motel in the middle of nowhere. Sleep in your freakin car ..with a bat.

If a slow moving body dripping blood doesn’t respond to you they might need more help than you can offer

Chop the dudes head off. knocking them out with a frying pan is not gonna do much.

Finally Lights On!. if your checking something out take out the shadows illuminate the room.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE

The Genius of Clark Griswold

mwl-christmasvacation-2

A Dynasty of films that set a blueprint to enjoy the blunders of vacationing with your family. Having been able to grow up along with the Griswold family as they explored the globe, I can say National Lampoons Christmas Vacation is in my top ten of all time favourite films. Everytime I watch I pick up small bits of laughter. The journey of their christmas tree from when they first scooped it out of the ground till it burst in flames from the cigar. The chase scene where the only animal that I didn’t see running through the house was a racoon. I can only wait until I get my hands on a set of holiday moose glasses for drinking egg nog. So get some popcorn and on The Second Show Of Christmas watch National Lampoons Christmas Vacation because like the jelly of the month club this film is a gift that keeps on giving.

Gizmo Turns Badass After Midnight

Gremlin

Like the snowflakes that fall upon this Christmas season no two Gremlins are like. That sweetest Christmas movie comes from malfeasance little characters trying to reak havoc on a small little town. On The Third Show Of Christmas watch The Gremlins.

A Magnificent Story Enhanced By The Amazing Alastair Sims

2103_1

Inspiring so many to bring his words to the screen, Charles Dickens created brilliance and imagination. The 1951 film is a honourable adaption to Dickens’ story. As movies relate to the book detail may be lost and scenes might alter how the book describes it, but Alastair Sims as Ebenezer Scrooge illustrated something that Dickens only related about the character, without being able to show a scene that spelled it out.  Sims version comes to enhance the story with the harshness of his demenor, the stubborness of his ways and the conflict of his emotions as he faces the misery and happiness of his life and begins to understand. Beauty all around my favourite part is Christmas day as he dances, stands on his head and scares the bejesus out of Mrs. Dilber. On The Fourth Show Of Christmas celebrate the wonderful Christmas Carol with Alastair Sims.

The Winter Warlock Just Wants To Be Called Winter

maxresdefault

It’s always special when you discover how each character enriches the story, showing something significant about themselves and how they connect to the moments in the story were their actions  becomes the history.  In particular the classic Santa Claus is Coming To Town brings the history of how it all came to be delightfully to life. Kris always having to be one step ahead of that mean old mayor The Burgermeister, finding ways to sneak kids the toys (which later had him on the run like Harrison Ford in the fugitive). The beard and red coat, Meeting Miss Jessica, the future Mrs Claus and all the Winter Warlock wanted to be called when he was nice was Winter. On The Fifth Show of Christmas watch some playful animation with greats like Fred Astaire and Mickey Rooney in Santa Clause Is Coming To Town.

Bringing in Christmas Like A Badass, John McClane Style

945053-die-hard

This is it, if anyone is wondering, Die Hard is my favorite christmas show. Partly because so many tell me it’s not, I feel I have discovered a rare holiday gem.  Just listening to the musical score throughout the movie, there is so much christmas music beautifully orchestrated you would think you were in Carnegie Hall,New York until  you see John McClane tearing across the screen with a machine gun and realize your in sunny LA with that determined German bastard Hans Gruber trying to take over Nakatomi Plaza on Christmas Eve.  With so many actors who had passed on the main role, I couldn’t image anyone else but badass Bruce Willis playing the role. On The Sixth Show Of Christmas get some Wild Turkey bourbon and watch Die Hard. To all a yippy ki ya muthaf%#*ker and to all a good night

How The Grinch Stole Our Hearts

how-the-grinch-stole-christmas-original

Finished the last of my Christmas Shopping (I hope). The traffic was bad, the people were jerks and all the noise, noise, noise makes it a perfect night to have some wine and watch That grouchy green old Grinch. He is so lovable my heart grows the full three sizes every time because like many of us, it’s when we expect someone to fall into their normal pattterns and then are completely surprised and delighted when they do what we never thought they were capable of doing. On The Seventh Show of Christmas  we take a sleigh ride to the quirky town of Whoville with The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

FInd The Heart of Dance and Theatre in White Christmas

WC_Still_0006.tif

As White Christmas was introduced to the world the holidays would forever get a precious gem that brings the heart of dance theatre and film all together.  The performance of the whole cast is phenomenal, but Danny Kaye  and his number in “Choreography” is my absolute favorite. Even in a snowless Vermont, the director Michael Curtiz, also of Casablanca, found an elegance in the landscape and every time I watch I become more aware of how much work went into building the sets and the whole production during that time of film. With The Eight Show of Christmas turn on some lights, curly up with some egg nog and watch  a timeless treasure.
